。。more

I could reread this book forever!!
Lyn,
The series is rather complex yet it will not be inappropriate for children。 I had read the short story about Cimorene which I adored as the princess did NOT want to be rescued。 I like all the additional characters in this series and really enjoyed Wrede's comments about the origin of the stories in her author's note in this anniversary edition。 The series is rather complex yet it will not be inappropriate for children。 I had read the short story about Cimorene which I adored as the princess did NOT want to be rescued。 I like all the additional characters in this series and really enjoyed Wrede's comments about the origin of the stories in her author's note in this anniversary edition。 。。。more

I'm not quite sure why Alex grabbed this bigger book, or if he really understands what has happened from chapter to chapter。 But I know that, as a family, we've read a chapter a night, cuddled up in his bed。 That alone would make it a favorite。Add to that, this is Kristina's childhood favorite, this is an excellent mix of magic and meta-fairy-tale, this has a well-lived in world and a complex set of central characters, and it's very well paced and you have everything you need for a beloved serie I'm not quite sure why Alex grabbed this bigger book, or if he really understands what has happened from chapter to chapter。 But I know that, as a family, we've read a chapter a night, cuddled up in his bed。 That alone would make it a favorite。Add to that, this is Kristina's childhood favorite, this is an excellent mix of magic and meta-fairy-tale, this has a well-lived in world and a complex set of central characters, and it's very well paced and you have everything you need for a beloved series。I'd still argue that the first in the series (Dealing with Dragons) is the high point for what's to follow, the humor and point of view seems to jibe beautifully with Wrede's own。 But the others have equally charming moments, even if they feel like a little more of a stretch to connect characters, plots, and themes。 But whatever your personal opinion, I can't recommend the series enough, especially when it involves, you, your loved ones, and a quiet moment at the end of the day。 。。。more

A wonderful series。 With magic, dragons, knights, wizards and princesses, this series has it all。 Follow Cimorene as she navigates a world where she doesn't fit。 As a very peculiar princess, she decides to run away and becomes a dragon's princess。 Now the adventure really starts。 A wonderful series。 With magic, dragons, knights, wizards and princesses, this series has it all。 Follow Cimorene as she navigates a world where she doesn't fit。 As a very peculiar princess, she decides to run away and becomes a dragon's princess。 Now the adventure really starts。 。。。more

Uplifting, funny children's fantasy seriesThis was probably the 10th or 11th time I reread these books。 I found them at the local library as a child, and come back to the tale of an unprincess like princess, dragons, magic and adventure every couple of years。 Great for kids of any age, particularly for girls who need a touch less romance, and more adventure。 I recommend this for any reader。 Uplifting, funny children's fantasy seriesThis was probably the 10th or 11th time I reread these books。 I found them at the local library as a child, and come back to the tale of an unprincess like princess, dragons, magic and adventure every couple of years。 Great for kids of any age, particularly for girls who need a touch less romance, and more adventure。 I recommend this for any reader。 。。。more

Wonderful fantasies!I think I've said it before, but I absolutely love everything Patricia Wrede ever wrote! For one thing, I like historicals and I like wit and lightheartedness。 Perhaps even more important, I love fantasies that are not grim and dark and bloody。 Wrede expertly demonstrates that it is perfectly possible to write about the battle of good with evil without spending your time on the evil side of the equation。 Wonderful fantasies!I think I've said it before, but I absolutely love everything Patricia Wrede ever wrote! Elizabeth,
These were a fun read! I would recommend them to the young ones who enjoy dragons and fantasy, and the young at heart who do the same。 The themes were enjoyable, even in my 30s, and you find yourself rooting for the characters, and getting sucked in。 If you're looking for something a little bit lighter than the heavy painting in some fantasy novels, without the loss of developing a unique world or its' characters, this series is perfect。 These were a fun read! SO GOOD! Definitely an easier read since this is meant for children, but the storyline is amazing。 My second time through the whole book。 When i read it again, I suggest only books 1 and 2。 If you read 3 then you have to read 4, and the ending is much more satisfying for me at book 2。 Still delightful either way though。

I read this so many times as a kid that that the book literally fell apart。 Revisiting it as an adult I'm relieved to find it is just as delightful as I remembered! Huge influence on me as a young reader, and as a lover of fantasy。 A classic。P。S。 I removed a star for a certain rabbit donkey from book 3, who is an even more annoying and useless character than I remembered, which is saying A Lot。 I read this so many times as a kid that that the book literally fell apart。 Revisiting it as an adult I'm relieved to find it is just as delightful as I remembered! My favorite seriesIf you enjoy strong characters, good storylines, mythical creatures, fairy tales, and a great deal of magical adventure this is the series for you。 The Enchanted Forest Chronicles taught me to adore reading when I was in the fourth grade。 Rereading them, as a 32 year old married woman, I find that I enjoy them just as much as I did way back then。 I will always recommend this series as my absolute favorite!

Rating this as a whole rather than individually, since it's as a whole the story is best appreciated I feel。 This is yet another favorite of mine from junior high, and I've long felt that it's deserving of proper Disney treatment as it has colorful characters, a fun tone, and a strong female lead in Princess Cimorene。 The entire series has a fun, slightly satirical tone to it that definitely influenced my own series 'The Sakamota Journals'。 While I'm told the last novel was in fact published fir Rating this as a whole rather than individually, since it's as a whole the story is best appreciated I feel。 This is yet another favorite of mine from junior high, and I've long felt that it's deserving of proper Disney treatment as it has colorful characters, a fun tone, and a strong female lead in Princess Cimorene。 The entire series has a fun, slightly satirical tone to it that definitely influenced my own series 'The Sakamota Journals'。 While I'm told the last novel was in fact published first, I'd recommend reading these in the following order: Dealing with Dragons, Searching for Dragons, Calling on Dragons, and Talking to Dragons。 。。。more

With a critical eye for fairytales as I have my unique preferences when it comes to fantasy land, this book initially grips you with lively characters with unique and surprisingly modern perspectives: a runaway, practical princess; a Dragon King who rules authoritatively instead of authoritarianly; mentions of faraway countries and places。。。 however the magic sort of ends and pewters there。 Instead of following the intricacies of the world in which these characters inhabit, the "adventures" the With a critical eye for fairytales as I have my unique preferences when it comes to fantasy land, this book initially grips you with lively characters with unique and surprisingly modern perspectives: a runaway, practical princess; a Dragon King who rules authoritatively instead of authoritarianly; mentions of faraway countries and places。。。 however the magic sort of ends and pewters there。 Instead of following the intricacies of the world in which these characters inhabit, the "adventures" the characters go through were bland, predictable, and unilateral。 Perhaps it was due to the last book being written first, and the backstories being fleshed out in additional books。 There definitely seemed to be a lack of depth in the temporal last book (the third book so to speak) and #4 did not deliver on the promise of he rich and varied character development that was introduced in book #1。 The spunk of the heroine was offset and overshadowed by the simple one-dimensional characters found in book #4。 I much prefer the more adult themed fairytales written by Diane Wynne Jones。 。。。more

I grew very attached to the characters and only rate it 4 stars because I couldn't finish the 4th book。 There are fewer characters you know and more that you don't, and for me it was too much and I stopped caring。 The first three were wonderful, though, especially the first two! This series (or, at the very least, the first book, Dealing with Dragons) was one of my childhood favorites。 I remembered very little of it, but I remember very clearly that I LOVED Cimorene and wanted to be her。 I've been meaning to do a reread, and a series of three plane rides over two weeks presented a good opportunity。 I wasn't sure what to do for a rating here, or if I should even rate it at all, because my nostalgia is very strong but truthfully I had a lot of mixed feelings about the ser This series (or, at the very least, the first book, Dealing with Dragons) was one of my childhood favorites。 I remembered very little of it, but I remember very clearly that I LOVED Cimorene and wanted to be her。 I've been meaning to do a reread, and a series of three plane rides over two weeks presented a good opportunity。 I wasn't sure what to do for a rating here, or if I should even rate it at all, because my nostalgia is very strong but truthfully I had a lot of mixed feelings about the series upon rereading it。 As an adult reader, I didn't think it was the best writing。 A lot of the language is fairly simplistic, some of the characterization felt inconsistent to me, I think writing the last book first and then trying to fit the other three books into that plan without changing the ending is a questionable technique even if it happened accidentally, and I felt that the running joke of many of the characters not understanding the magician's "technical" talking was pretty annoying。 But, of course, it's not a book for adults。 It's a book for children。 (Apparently the author didn't intend that and was surprised when an editor told her she'd written a children's book。 This is absolutely astonishing to me。 These could not be more obviously children's literature。) And because I read this as a child, I happen to know that from a child's perspective it's pretty great, and ultimately that's what matters。And there are things about these books that I genuinely love at any age! The highlighting/subverting/fond mocking of fairy tale tropes is genuinely delightful, and in many cases really clever。 Genre-aware characters have such wonderful comedic potential, and Wrede uses them masterfully。 。。。more
